TUATARA;
The Tuatara has a legendary ‘third eye’, althought it is part of a complex organ, it is covered with scales early in its growth. The scientific name of the species means ‘spotted Tuatara’, with the Maori name interpreted as ‘spiny back’. This species once was found in Africa, North America and Europe, but died out about 60 million years ago. It is believed that Tuatara may have once lived in the sea, as they have no outer ears and vertebrae similar to those of a fish.
